Hong Kong youth earns Masters silver

17th November, Kuching: Topseed, Alex Yu of Hong Kong team A earned the Masters silver medal at the concluding 18th Asian School Tenpin Bowling Championships after losing to Tun Ameerul of Malaysia A in the Boy's Masters final.

Yu, who ended the Masters second block in the lead with a 16-game total of 3791 with six wins to advance to the stepladder finals as topseed, found challenger and second-seed, Tun Ameerul a handful when Yu lost the first game, 205-269 to trail by 64 pins.

In the second game, Yu found the condition tricky and lost to the 18-year-old Malaysian, 181-201 and a two-game total 386-470 to take home the silver medal. Tun Ameerul, who was fifth in the first block, finished second to Yu in the second block with 3685 from six wins.

He had earlier outclassed third-seed, Shoumick Datta of India, 279-237 to face Yu in the final. The two-handed Shoumick, who retained third position after the second block to advance to the stepladder final as third-seed, took home the bronze medal.

Singles and All Events gold medallist, Ivan Tse of Hong Kong, who was fourth in the first block, dropped down to fifth with a total of 3585, 16 pins behind Muhd Arif Iskandar, who missed the stepladder finals in fourth by 31 pins.

Despite winning the gold for Malaysia A, Hong Kong emerged as Boy's team champion with 2 gold, 1 silver and 1 bronze medal. Malaysia A won 1 gold, 4 silver and 1 bronze medal to finish second overall. Australia and Indonesia tied in third position with 1 gold medal each.

Meanwhile, Malaysia completed the double and swept the Masters gold medals when topseed, Puteri Nurul Dini easily defeated challenger and second-seed, Fion Liew Shan Ting of Singapore A, 458-369 in the Girl's finals.

Puteri Nurul won the first game, 207-176 and 251-193 in the second game to win her third gold and a clean sweep of all the five gold medals in the Girl's division.

Liew edged overnight leader and third-seed, Fiona Yew Hiok Hing, 176-158 in the semi-finals to advance to the final.

Yew tied with All Events bronze medallist and team-mate, Shin Zong Yi on 3202 after the position-round Masters finals earlier. Yew beat Shin, 216-189 in a one-game roll-off to break the tie and to make the stepladder finals.


Hong Kong A emerging as Boy's Team champion

Puteri Nurul, who was third in the first block with 1623, won all the eight matches in the second block for a total of 3395 to advance to the stepladder finals as topseed. Liew, who was seventh overnight, leapfrog to second with six wins and a total of 3341.

Nur Amirah Ng of Singapore B team dropped from second in the first block to seventh managing only two wins and a draw in the second block. Triple gold medallist, Gillian Lim of Malaysia A finished sixth behind Chloe Jones of Australia in fourth.

Malaysia A girls won 5 gold, 2 silver and 1 bronze medal to earn the Girl's team champion title. Australia took home 2 silver medals while Singapore A settled for 1 silver and 4 bronze medals.

Malaysia A also emerged as overall champion with a total medal haul of 6-6-2. Hong Kong A finished second with 2-1-1, Australia third with 1-2-0, Indonesia fourth with 1-0-0, Singapore fifth with 0-1-5 and India sixth with 0-0-1.

63 boys and 28 girls from a total of 10 Asian countries participated at this year's Asian School Tenpin Bowling Championships co-hosted by Amatuer Bowling Association of Sarawak and the Malaysian Tenpin Bowling Congress.

Hong Kong youth leads first block

16th November, Kuching: Doubles bronze medallist, Alex Yu of Hong Kong A team and two bronze medallist, Fiona Yew of Singapore A team led the Boy's and Girl's Masters first block finals of the 18th Asian School Tenpin Bowling Championships.

Sole Kuwaiti finalist, Ali Heedar surprised the field when he led after beating Rhys Woszczeiko of Australia B, 245-202 and earned 10 pins extra for the win in the opening match. Jackson Botham beat compatriot and Doubles gold medallist, Cullum Borck, 241-174 to trail the Kuwaiti in second.

When Ali lost his second game, Team silver medallist, Muhd Arif Iskandar of Malaysia A added another win in his second match with a stunning 266 to take over the running. Two gold medallist, Ivan Tse of Hong Kong A also won his first two matches to move up to second, 42 pins adrift.

Muhd Arif won his next two matches but could not hang on to his lead. Alex Yu, who lost his first match, came back with three straight wins and his fourth match of 278 propelled him into the lead as Muhd Arif slipped down to second.

Although Yu lost his fifth match, the 15-year-old Hong Kong national youth won his remaining matches of the first block to lead with 1918 from a total of six wins. Muhd Arif won his last two matches to finish second with 1904 also from six wins..

Two-handed Shoumick Datta of India, who had an aweful start with 138, recovered with a 279 in his second match and went on to win four more matches to finish the block in third position with 1852 from five wins..

Tse finished fifth with 1802 from six wins while 2017 Asian Youth Singles gold medallist, Tun Ameerul Hakin of Malaysia A completed the top five with 1780, also from six wins.

The finalists will resume with their second block of seven matches and a position round match to decide the top 3 boys an top 3 girls advancing to the Stepladder finals.

The first match will be between the second-seed and third-seed. The winners of the first match will proceed to meet the top-seed over a two-match total pinfalls final to decide the champion.

Hong Kong wins second gold

15th November, Kuching: Singles gold medallist, Ivan Tse picked up his and Hong Kong A team its second gold medal at the 18th Asian School Tenpin Bowling Championships after topping the Boy's All Events standings.

Tse, who trailed two silver medallist, Muhd Hazim of Malaysia A team by 2 pins after the first block of the Team of 4 event played earlier, added 3-game series of 597 in the second block to total 3949 for the gold medal.

Muhd Hazim only managed a 3-games series of 573 in the second block, 22 pins behind Tse to finish second with 3927 for his third silver medal. Singles silver medallist, Ahmad Azriw of Malaysia A posted a high 3-games series of 678 but settled for the bronze medal with 3924, just 3 pins behind his team-mate.

Doubles gold medallist, Cullum Borck of Australia A team missed the podium by 9 pins to finish fourth with 3915. Alex Yu of Hong Kong A team, who won the Doubles bronze medal with Tse, qualified for the Round-Robin Masters finals eighth in the All Events standings with 3848.

Singles bronze medallist, Aidan Poh of Singapore A was the cut in 16th position with 3699 (averaging 205.5) to advance to the Masters finals. His compatriot, Keefe Tan missed the cut by 6 pins with 3693.

Nixon Chan was the best Hong Kong finisher who did not make the cut and finished 26th position.

Other Hong Kong bowlers were Boco Wong (35th-3487), Oscar Poon (40th-3452), Marco Leung (42nd-3451), Keith Mark (43rd-3423) and Jason Li (54th-3225).

Five Malaysians, three Australians, two each from Hong Kong, Indonesia and Singapore, and one each from India and Kuwait made up the top 16 advancing to the Round-Robin Masters finals.

Bronze medal for Hong Kong

14th November, Kuching: Singles gold medallist, Ivan Tse and Alex Yu picked up the Boy's Doubles bronze medal at the 18th Asian School Tenpin Bowling Championships after finishing third as Callum Borck and Lachlan Stephenson won the gold for Australia A team.

Tse and Yu, who won the Doubles gold at this year's 17th Asian School in Hong Kong, set a blistering pace with an almost record-breaking 536 opener to lead the second Singapore B pair by 63 pins. The duo added 475 in their second game to extend their lead slightly to 79 pins.

Although Tse and Yu stumbled to a 363 in the third game, they still maintain a decent margin of 66 pins to their nearest opponent. Borck and Stephenson trailed in second position while the second Malaysia A pair and the second Australia B pair in pursuit.

Hong Kong recovered with 452 in the fourth game and increase their lead to 77 pins. Australia A1 continued to trail in second with Malaysia A2 and Singapore B2 not making much progress.

Borck and Stephenson fired a sizzling 506 in the fifth game to overtake Hong Kong and built up a 50-pin gap after Tse and Yu managed only 379. Muhd Hazim and Singles silver medallist, Ahmad Azriq of Malaysia A2 was third, 33 pins further away.

The Aussie ended the block with a stronger 441 sixth game to seal the gold medal with 2696. Malaysia A2 downed 453 to snatch the silver medal with 2625 while Hong Kong earned the bronze medal with 2623, just two pins adrift.

The other Hong Kong A pair of Keith Mark and Oscar Poon managed 18th position with 2277 while the two other B Team pairs of Marco Leung-Jason Li and Boco Wong-Nixon Chan finished 23rd and 25th positions respectively.

After two events competed, Tse topped the Boy's All Events standings (12 games) with 2756 followed by Muhd Hazim of Malaysia A in second with 2668 and Cullum Borck of Australia A in third with 2632.

Competition will shift to the Team of 4 event to be played over two blocks of 3 games each on November 15. The top 16 boys and top 16 girls based on their standings in the All Events will advance to the Round-Robin Masters finals to be staged over two blocks on November 16 and 17.
