Fourth bronze medal for Hong Kong

2nd June, Tamuning: James Lui ended the 27th East Asian Tenpin Bowling Championships with a fourth bronze medal for Hong Kong after he lost 0-2 (203-238, 192-213) to Lee Ga-Ram of Korea in the semi-final round of the Men's Masters.

Seeded No. 9, Lui breezed past No. 8 seed, 2-0 (236-174, 214-157) in knockout Round 1 of the Masters finals. Lui also had an easy victory over Jimmy Cheung 2-0 (226-193, 269-204) in Round 2 to earn a spot in the semi-finals.

But Lui could not repeat the form he showed in the earlier rounds going down to No. 2 seed, Lee 203-238 and 192-213 to settle for the bronze medal. Lee went on to clinch the gold medal 2-1 after he had to go to the third and deciding game, 245-182, 211-249 and 253-216 defeating Baek Jong-Yun in the all-Korean final.

Baek, who picked up the silver medal, sailed past Lee Jae-Jung, 2-0 (235-199, 267-235) in the other all-Korean semi-final match. Top seed and All Events gold medalist, Alex Yu was eliminated in the opening round after losing to No. 16 seed, Qi Wankang of China, 0-2.

No. 15 seed, Ernest Kwok was also knocked out in Round 1 with a defeat to the champion, Lee, 1-2 in Round 1. Ivan Tse beat Singles gold medalist, Tony Wong 2-1 in the All-Hong Kong Round 1 encounter but lost to bronze medalist, Lee 1-2 in Round 2. No. 7 seed, Jimmy Cheung beat No. 10 seed, Hwang Sung-Hyun of Korea 2-0 in his opening round but lost his next match to Lui.

Meanwhile, Peng Rui of China denied Korea a clean sweep of the medals in the women's division but Peng could not win the China's first gold when she lost to No. 5 seed, Jang Ryeon-Gyeong, 0-2 (201-217, 209-268) in the finals.

Jang defeated Kim Hyun-A, 2-0 in the all-Korean semi-final while Peng ousted No. 2 seed, Lee Young-Seung of Korea, 2-0 in the other semi to advance to the gold medal round.

Hong Kong had their best East Asian Tenpin Bowling Championships outing with a medal haul of 2-2-4 while Korea emerged as overall champion with a medal haul of 9-5-12. Host nation finished third with 1-2-2 and China went home without a gold medal except with 3 silver and 3 bronze medals.

Hong Kong earns second silver medal

1st June, Tamuning: Top seed, Hong Kong earned their second silver medal at the 27th East Asian Tenpin Bowling Championships after narrowly losing to No. 3 seed and host nation, Guam 226-221 in the Team of Five Baker format deciding title match.

Hong Kong's James Lui, Alex Yu, Ernest Kwok, Ivan Tse and Tony Wong had advanced to the gold medal match with a comprehensive victory over No. 4 seed, China 240-208 and 256-147 in the first semi-final. Guam's Ray San Nicolas, Ricky Duenas, Paul Kaneshito, Jay Leon Guerrero and Gregory Borja upset favourite, Korea, 198-151 and 225-171 in the second semi to set up the finale with Hong Kong.

In the first game of the title match, Guam took advantage of Hong Kong's mishap in the early frames to win 221-203. The second deciding game was much tighter but Guam's anchorman, Borja struck in his final shot to shut out Hong Kong of a possible fight back.

Hong Kong, who led in the first block yesterday, ended the preliminaries with 6540 to seal top seed for the final round. Korea finished second with 6385 while Guam and China clinched third and fourth spots with 6326 an 5720 respectively.

In the women's division, there was no doubt that Korea would emerge as eventual champion. Lee Young-Seung, Jang Ha-Eun, Jang Ryeon-Gyeong (alternated by Kim Mi-Ae), Kim Su-Bin and Kim Hyun-A out-classed challenger, China, 246-139 and 203-164 in the title match to win their sixth gold medal of the championship.

Second-seed Li Qing, Yuan Yue, Yuan Bujuan, Kong Min and Peng Rue of China advanced to the title match after beating host nation, Guam with a resounding 216-159 and 180-148 in the semi-final. Korea topped the preliminaries with 5746, 446 pins ahead of China in second with 5300 and Guam clinched third spot with 4554.

Alex Yu earned Hong Kong's first gold medal after topping the Men's All Events with 5404. Korea's Lee Ga-Ram ad Baek Jong-Yun settled for the silver and bronze medals with 5353 and 5333 respectively while a third Korean, Lee Jae-Jung missed the podium by 19 pins in fourth.

Korea swept all the three medals in the Women's All Events. Kim Mi-Ae gave Korea their seventh gold medal with 5275. Lee Young-Seung and Kim Su-Bin contributed the silver and bronze medals with 5196 and 5168. The Koreans also finished fourth, fifth and sixth positions.

The top 16 men and top 8 women qualified for the Masters finals which will be contested tomorrow, June 2 ending the week-long championships at Central Lanes.

Two bronze medals for Hong Kong

30th May, Tamuning: Top seed and third-seed trios of Hong Kong had to settle for two more bronze medals at the 27th East Asian Tenpin Bowling Championships when they lost their matches in the Trios Matchplay rounds while Korea picked up two more gold medals.

Jimmy Cheung, Ernest Kwok and Singles gold medalist, Tony Wong had topped the six-games preliminaries with 3949 pinfalls to advance to the matchplay knockout rounds as top seed.

The trio lost to Ricky Duenas, Jay Leon Guerrero and Gregory Borja of Guam, 619-691 to settle for the bronze.

The second Hong Kong trio of Alex Yu, Ivan Tse and James Lui were denied a place in the final after they narrowly lost to the Korean trio of Hwang Sung-Hyun, Lee Jae-Jung and Baek Jong Yun, 675-682 to take home their third bronze medal in the championships.

The Koreans went on to win their fourth gold medal with a resounding victory over host nation Guam, 723-665 in the title match. The champion made the matchplay finals with a total pinfall of 3918, 31 pins behind Hong Kong in the earlier preliminaries.

Yu, Tse and Lui finished third with 3878 while Guam earned fourth place with 3771. The second Korean trio missed out in fifth position with 3750.

Meanwhile, Korean women dominated the trios event to win their fifth gold medal of the championships. The top seed of Lee Young-Seung, Kim Mi-Ae and Kim Su-Bin were denied the gold when they were out-classed by second-seed, Kim Hyun-A, Jang Ryeon-Gyeong and Jang Ha-Eun, 588-685 in the all-Korean final.

The champion had sailed past fourth-seed, Nina Duenas, Kathy Bilon-Mandapat and Francine Gatan of Guam 665-464 in the first semi-final match while the second Korean trio and second-seed defeated third-seed, Li Qing, Kong Min and Peng Rui of China, 635-568 in the second semi.

Korea finished one-two in the earlier six-games preliminaries with 3982 and 3751 respectively. China and Guam were third and fourth position with 3314 and 3084 in the six trios field.

After three events and 18 games played, Baek Jong-Yun and Lee Ga-Ram of Korea occupied the top two spots in the Men's All Events standings with 4043 and 4013 respectively. Singles silver medalist, Ricky Duenas of Guam and Lee Jae-Jung shared third spot with 1300.

Korea totally dominated the women division by occupying all the top six spots with Jang Ha-Eun in the lead with 3981. Kim Su-Bin and Kim Mi-Ae were second and third with 3919 and 3910.

Competition will shift to the Team of Five with the first block of three games to be contested on May 31 and the second block on June 1.

Hong Kong adds silver and bronze medals

29th May, Tamuning: Hong Kong's doubles of Ivan Tse-James Lui and Alex Yu-Tong Wong added a silver and bronze to their medal haul at the 27th East Asian Tenpin Bowling Championships Men's Doubles matchplay round on Sunday.

Tse downed 183 and Lui 211 for a total of 394 to lose to top seed, Hwang Sung-Hyun and Lee Jae-Jung of Korea in the gold medal round. Hwang shot only 187 but thanks to Lee's strong game of 248 made the difference.

Third-seed, Tse and Lui had earlier eiliminated No. 2 seed of Lee Ga-Ram and Lee Seung-Baek of Korea, 467-435 in the first semi-final match to set up the final with the top seed. Alex Yu and Singles gold medalist, Tong Wong were eliminated by Hwang and Lee 412-491 in the other semi.

The champion had topped the preliminary round with 2835 with Hwang posting the highest six-games total of 1427 while Lee knocked down 1408. Lee Ga-Ram and Lee Seung-Baek gave Korea a one-two finish in second with 2752.

Tse and Lui took third spot with 2696 and the final matchplay round spot went to Yu and Wong with 2628. The third Hong Kong pair of Ernest Kwok and Jimmy Cheung did well to take fifth position with 2578 ahead of Korea's third pair.

Meanwhile, Korea almost had a clean sweep in the Women's Doubles event but were denied by China's Li Qing and Yuan Yue. The Chinese pair knocked out top seed, Kim Hyun-A and Jang Ryeon-Gyeong of Korea, 441-407 in the first semi-final match.

Li and Yuan were, however unable to beat No. 3 seed, Jang Ha-Eun and Lee Young-Seung of Korea, losing 433-457 in the title match to settle for the silver medal. Jang and Lee had reached the finals after dispatching No. 2 seed, Kim Mi-Ae and Kim Su-Sin in the other all-Korean semi-final match.

Kim Hyun-A and Jang Ryein-Gyeong topped the earlier preliminary round with 2595 ahead of Kim Mi-Ae and Kim Su-Bin in second with 2585. Jang Ha-Eun and Lee Young-Seung finished third with 2445 with the Chinese pair of Li and Yuan earning fourth spot with 2397.

The second Chinese pair of Kong Min and Peng Rui finished fifth with 2357 while host nationa's Kathy Bilon-Mandapat and Karanina Duenas managed sixth position with 2171. Competition will resume with the Trios event on Monday, May 30 and the Team of 5 on Tuesday, May 31.

Perfect start for Hong Kong

28th May, Tamuning: Tony Wong gave Hong Kong a perfect start to the 27th East Asian Tenpin Bowling Championships when he defied all odds to beat Ricky Duenas of Guam, 211-171 in the title playoffs to win the Men's Singles gold medal.

Wong got off to a great start with three strikes-in-a-row in the match against Duenas. Midway through the match, both begun to struggle and while Duenas had two splits, Wong cappitalised and went on to the gold medal and Duenas settling for the silver.

Won got the better of top seed, Qi Wankang of China, 236-188 in the first semi-final matchplay round and Duenas edged third-seed, Lee Ga Ram of Korea, 219-213 in the second semi to advance to the title match.

Qi, who settled for the bronze medal, had earlier topped the six-games preliminary with a total of 1433 pinfalls. Duenas finished second with 1379 while Lee ended with a big game of 268 to snatch third spot with 1365.

Wong, who had a poor start with 158, recovered with 218, 215, 233 before firing the championsho's first 300 in the fifth game and 201 in his final game to clinch the fourth and final matchplay spot with 1325.

His team-mate, Alex Yu missed the cut by five pins to finish a creditable fifth position with 1320. Jimmy Cheung took eighth position with 1283, James Lui tenth with 1267, Ivan Tse 12th with 1239 and Ernest Kwok 15th with 1220.

Korea totally dominated the women's division claiming the top six positions in the preliminaries. Fourth-seed, Lee Young Seung overcame team-mate and second-seed, Kim Mi Ae, 256-248 to win the gold medal leaving the silver medal for Kim.

Lee used a four bagger in her early frames to eliminate top seed, Kim Su Bin 212-193 in the first semi-final playoff while Kim ousted third-seed, Jang Ha Eun 228-194 in the other semi to set up an all-Korean final.

China's Kong Min was the only competitor to penetrate through the Korean line up finishing in fifth place, 39 pins out of the cut. Competition will resume with the Doubles event on Sunday, May 29.
