Hong Kong nationals takes one-two

16th April, Bangkok: Hong Kong national bowlers, Michael Mak and Eric Tseng finished one-two in the Men's Open Round 2 Finals of the 40th MWA Thailand International Open ahead of defending champion, Shaker Al Hassan of UAE in third.

The 19-year-old PBA-WBT Saudi Open first runner-up got off the block with a sizzling 268 to lead Thailand's Annop Arromsaranon in second by 21 pins. Mak followed it up with 225 and 199 but found his lead being reduced to just 10 pins as Shaker mounted his challenge.

Mak bounced back with another stunning 279 to pull away from the Emirati left-hander to 93 pins after the fourth game but stumbled again in the fifth with just 189 and having his gap reduced again to 34 pins.

The leader ended strongly with 257 to end the round with 1417, 82 pins ahead of team-mate, Eric Tseng, who stormed home with 248 and 245 to snatch second spot with 1335 and giving Hong Kong a one-two finish.

Shaker settled for third with 1325 a further 10 pins away. Annop and 2014 ABF Tour Kuwait champion, Mahmood Al Attar of UAE rounding out the top 5 with 1305 and 1303 respectively.

Rickle Kam made the cut in 18th position with 1196 while Benjamin Hong of Singapore missed the cut by 6 pins finishing 19th position.

Three other Hong Kong national finalists, Achilles Hung, Mike Chan and Ashley Hui also advanced to the next round in sixth, tenth and 13th positions respectively except for Wicky Yeung, who finished 27th.

The top 18 men will be joined by the top 3 local and top 3 overseas seeded qualifiers to bowl another 6 games from scratch in Round 3 Finals later today. The Women's Open qualifiers will also contest their Round 3 Finals at the same time.

The top 6 men and top 6 women will qualify for the stepladder shootout finals after the ROund 3 Finals.

The men's champion will stand to take home the top prize of 300,000 Baht (approx. US$9,290) while the women's champion will earn 100,000 Baht top prize.

Seven Hong Kong nationals make finals

14th April, Bangkok: Hong Kong national bowler, Joshua Chow squeezed into Round 3 Finals after finishing in the Men's Open top 3 overseas pool of the 40th MWA Thailand International Open while six other team-mates also made the Round 2 Finals.

Chow, who had slipped into the mixed pool after the second block, crawled his way back up into third in the overseas pool to earn a crucial bye for Round 3 finals. The Hong Kong national posted 1070 in the third block for a 15-game tally of 3331.

Shaik Abdul Hameed of India and Squad C leader, Kim Bolleby of Sweden finished ahead of Chow with 3452 and 3384 to complete the top 3 seeded qualifiers.

But 2009 Thailand Open champion and overnight leader, Yannaphon Larpapharat comfortably won the qualifying rounds with a total of 3594, 142 pins ahead of his nearest rival. Perfect gamer, Atittarat Cheng and Badin Lerdpiriyasakulkit joined Yannaphon in second and third with 3348 and 3276.

Defending champion, Shaker Al Hassan of UAE missed the top 3 to head the mixed pool (local and overseas) with 3323 total. PBA-WBT Saudi Open first runner-up, Michael Mak had a chance to make the top 3 but posted 1063 to end third in the mixed pool with 3278.

Rickle Kam and Eric Tseng made the Round 2 Finals fifth and 17th in the mixed pool while Ashely Hui squeezed into the finals in 26th position with 2951. Achilles Hung, Wicky Yeung and Lau Kwun Ho missed the cut but will attempt to qualify in the despoerado squad later this evening.

Qualifiers in the mixed pool together with four additional qualifiers from the desperado squad will contest Round 2 Finals on April 16. The top 18 finishers will be joined by the 6 seeded qualifiers for Round 3 Finals.

Meanwhile, Chan Shuk Han finished second in the Women's Open overseas pool with 2918 behind leader, Wendy Chai of Malaysia on 3039 and ahead of Nur Dyana of Singapore in third with 2882.

Angkana Netrviseth, Tanaprang Sathean and Kantaporn Singhabubpha of Thailand occupied the top 3 positions of the local pool with 3036, 2857 and 2828 respectively.

Because there are only 14 qualifiers, all the Women's Open finalists will skip Round 2 and proceed directly to contest Round 3 Finals on April 16.

Hong Kong national retains lead

13th April, Bangkok: Overnight squad leader, Joshua Chow retained the lead of the Men's Open Squad A standings after the second block of qualifying rounds of the 40th MWA Thailand International ended on Sunday.

Chow, who led in the opening squad of the first block on Saturday, extended his lead with another stunning 1159 in the second block to take his 10-game tally to 2261.

The left-hander finished 28 pins ahead of Atittarat Cheng of Thailand in second with 2233.

PBA-World Bowling Tour Saudi first runner-up, Michael Mak chalked up a higher 5-game series of 1169 for a total of 2215 to take up third in the squad and second in the overseas pool behind Chow.

Rickle Kam, who had a lack-luster 928 series in the first block, posted the highest 5-games series of the squad with 1203 to haul himself up to fourth in the squad and third overall in the overseas pool with 2131.

Eric Tseng slipped to sixth in the squad and fourth overall with 2010 while Mike Chan amassed a total of 1993. Achilles Hung and Ashley Hui both did well with 1971 and 1940 respectively.

Wicky Yeung and Lau Kwun Ho, who managed 1863 and 1855 respectively, need to put in a strong series in the third block in order to secure their spots in the finals. Atittarat topped the local pool followed by Atchariya Cheng and Siva Kritsaruenon in second and third with 2089 and 1862 respectively.

In the Women's Open division, Chan Shuk Han also put in a much better second block series of 1010 and the only women in the squad. Her 10-game total of 1934 would secure her a top 3 finish in the overseas pool.

Two more squads remained to be bowled later today and the third and final block on April 14. The top 3 Men's Open local and top 3 Men's Open overseas pool will earn a bye into Round 3 Finals while the rest will have to contest the Round 2 Finals.

Hong Kong nationals take top 3 spots

12th April, Bangkok: 2010 ABF Tour Macau champion, Joshua Chow led team-mates, Michael Mak and Eric Tseng to take up the top 3 spots of the Men's Open overseas pool standings after the first block of qualifying rounds at the 40th MWA Thailand International Open.

Chow, who got off the block with a cracking 258, eventually settled for second in the opening squad to leader, Atittarat Cheng of Thailand. The Hong Kong national bowler amassed a 5-game total of 1102, 65 pins behind the Thai, who totaled 1167.

Atittarat also became the first bowler to roll a 300 in the third game of thE first block. Atittarat's younger brother, Atchariya finished third in the squad with 1049 while Michael Mak and Eric Tseng of Hong Kong rounded out the top 5 with 1046 and 995 respectively.

Chow, Mak and Tseng currently occupy the top 3 positions in the overseas pool and could earn a bye into Round 3 finals. Likewise Atittarat, Atchariya and Tavakron Angngen took up the top 3 positions of the local pool and could earn a bye as well.

Qualifiers from positions 1 to 26 in the mixed pool (local and overseas) and 4 qualifiers from the desperado squad will have to battle it off at Round 2 Finals.

The top 18 finishers will be joined by the 6 seeded qualifiers for another 6 games in Round 3 Finals. The top 6 at the end of the Round 3 Finals will proceed to the stepladder shootout finals.

Meanwhile, 2008 Thailand Open champion, Chan Shuk Han was the only Women's Open qualifier in Squad A, Chan totaled 924 to take up top spot in the overseas pool. Other women bowlers are scheduled to bowl their first block in the last squad of the day.

Three blocks of 5 games each will be played over three days at the end of which qualifiers will be determined. The top 16 Asian men and top 16 Asian women will also qualify for the ABF Tour Thailand 2014 which will be staged at the same centre on April 17.
