Hong Kong national wins Squad A

14th April, Bangkok: 2016 East Asian Championships triple bronze medallist, James Lui topped Squad A at the end of the third block of qualifying round to lead three team-mates for the Men's Open Round 2 Masters finals at the 43rd MWA-Singha Thailand International Open.

Block 1 leader, Lee Won Seok regained the lead from Block 2 leader, Hardy Rachmadian of Indonesia at the opening Game 11 with Wu Siu Hong and Tony Wong sharing third spot. Lee continued to lead the pack for the next three games as Lui moved into second after firing back-to-back 255s.

The Korean stumbled to a low 153 allowing Lui to clinch top spot with 3133. Lee settled for second with 3128, five pins adrift. Rachmadian took third spot with 3125, a further three pins away.

Tony Wong and Rickle Kam rounded out the top five with 3099 and 3094. Although Wu finished sixth with 3034 in this squad, he missed the cut for the finals.


Four Hong Kong nationals for Round 2 finals

Michael Mak needed to strike out in his final frame but was unable to do so, also missing the cut with 3029. But Mak made amends by topping the desperado squad with 279 to qaulify.

Tseng, who was amongst his team-mates, suffered a low 181 in his final game to finish 3028, behind Mak. Mike Chan, Wicky Yeung, Joshua Chow, Ivan Tse and Lau Kwun Ho all failed to make progress. Defending champion, Kim Bolleby topped the local pool with 3218 followed by Yannaphon Larpapharat in second with 3129 and Annop Aromsarannon third with 3105.

After all four squads completed their third block, Muhd Jaris Goh of Singapore remained in the lead with 3455. Hwang Sunghyun of Korea and Yang Nien-Hua of Chinese Taipei rolled an identical big game of 267 to clinch second and third spots with 3313 and 3311 respectively.

Four-time PBA Bowler of the Year, Mika Koivuniemi, who topped Squad D, headed the mixed pool with 3279 while 2016 Asian Championships Masters gold medallist, Rafiq Ismail took eighth position with 3255. Basil Ng of Singapore survived the cut at 26th position with 3050, averaging 203.33 after a total of eight bowlers making the cut in the last squad.

Meanwhile, Milki Ng of Hong Kong, who barely made the cut in 22nd position with 2855, was relegated to tie the last qualifying spot with Julia Lam of Macau after Nathida Sertluecha of Thailand qualified in 21st position in the last squad with 2859.

Ng won the one-ball roll-off against Lam with a strike to clinch the 22nd qualifying position. Jang Haeun of Korea topped the Women's Open overseas pool with 3115 ahead of overnight leader, New Hui Fen of Singapore in second with 3111.

Victoria Chin, who won Squad D, clinched third spot with 3067 while Sharon Limansantoso of Indonesia headed the mixed pool with 3032. Chan Shuk Han, Zoe Tam and Joan Cheng all missed the finals in 31st, 35th and 37th positions respectively.

Tanaprang Sathean topped the local pool with 2961 followed by Kristsanakorn Sangaroon in second with 2906 and defending champion, Yanee Saebe third with 2895.

Twenty-four men and 16 women will contest Round 2 final over six games tomorrow. The top 14 men and top 10 women will advance to Round 3 finals joined by the top 6 men and top 6 women seeded qualifiers for another six games. The top 6 men and top 6 women will proceed to the stepladder shootout finals.

Three men and a women in the cut

13th April, Bangkok: Wu Siu Hong led two other Hong Kong men and a women to the Men's and Women's Open Round 2 finals at the end of the second block qualifying round of the 43rd MWA-Singha Thailand Open at Blu-O Rhythm & Bowl Ratchayothin.

Overnight squad winner, Lee Won Seok of Korea continued to lead the pack from games sixth to ninth before Hardy Rachmadian of Indonesia snatching top spot with 2174. Lee settled for second with 2167. Wu, who trailed the leading duo for most of the way, finished third with 2074.

Eric Tseng, Tony Wong, James Lui, Michael Mak and Rickle Kam all improved to take up fourth to eighth positions in Squad A with 2062, 2029, 2002, 1978 an 1977 respectively. Wicky Yeung, Joshua Chow, Mike Chan and Lau Kwun Ho failed to make any headway.

After all squads completed their second block, overnight leader, Muhd Jaris Goh of Singapore extended his lead in the overseas pool with 2345.


Wu Siu Hong finishing third in Squad A

Squad B winner, Yang Nien-Hua of Chinese Taipei finished 98 pins behind the Singaporean on 2247. Oku Keita of Singapore clinched third spot with 2198 after topping Squad D. Rachmadian, who was third before the final squad, slipped down to head the mixed pool. Lee Won Seok also slipped out of the top 3 in eighth position.

Annop Aromsarannon became the new local pool leader with an improved 2042. Defending champion, Kim Bolleby and Yannaphon Larpapharat occupied second and third positions with 2032 and 2024.

Wu ended up in 16th position, Tseng 18th and Wong 25th. There is a tie for the cut at 26th position going to Baek Jongyun of Korea and Andrew Frawley of Australia with 2024, averaging 202.40.

Meanwhile, Milki Ng, who finished her second block with 1848 fifth in Squad A, Chan Shuk Han, Zoe Tam and Joan Cheng performed poorly with 1795, 1790 and 1767 respectively. Sharon Limansantoso of Indonesia became the new leader after winning the Squad C with 2096.

Overnight leader, New Hui Fen of Singapore settled for second with 2072 while Squad D winner, Sin Li Jane of Malaysia clinched third spot with 2023 after all squads have completed their second block of qualifying.

Tanarang Sathean, Kristsanakorn and defending champion, Yanee Saebe occupied the top 3 local spots with 1990, 1976 and 1886. Esther Cheah headed the mixed pool with 2012 while the cut at 22nd position went to Milki Ng averaging 183.80.

Chan, Tam and Cheng finished 33rd, 34th and 37th positions. The men and women will resume with their third and final block of five games tomorrow.

Promising start for Hong Kong

12th April, Bangkok: Hong Kong national bowlers competing in the 43rd MWA-Singha Thailand International Open Bowling Championships got off to a promising start during their first block of qualifying rounds with Wu Siu Hong finishing third in the opening squad.

Lee Won Seok of Korea led from start to finish in the five-games first block of qualifying with 1162. Eric Tseng, who trailed the leader for the first two games, fizzled off to end in fourth with 993. His compatriot, Wu finished third with 1047.

Indonesia's Hardy Rachmadian took second position with 1073. Rickle Kam and James Lui did well to finish fifth and sixth positions with 988 and 985 respectively.

Other Hong Kong bowlers, Michael Mak, Tony Wong and Wicky Yeung managed eighth to tenth while Ivan Tse, Joshua Chow, Mike Chan, Lau Kwun Ho and Jimmy Cheung did not manage to shine taking up 13th, 16th, 22md amd 24th positions.

After all four squads completed their first block, Muhd Jaris Goh of Singapore topped the overseas pool with 1118 followed by Lee Won Seok of Korea in second with 1107 and Yang Nien-Hua of Chinese Taipei third with 1119.

Yannaphon Larpapharat topped the local pool with 1077 ahead of compatriots, Surasak Manuwong in second with 1071 and Sithiphol Kunaksorn third with 1047.

Kuek Qi En of Singapore headed the mixed pool with 1118 with Wu in 19th position. The cut in 26th position went to Aseel Alroomi of Kuwait with 1017, averaging 203.40. Tseng is off the cut by only 18 pins.

The top 3 local and top 3 overseas qualifiers will earn a bye and automatically qualify for Round 3 finals while qualifiers positioned 7 to 26 plus 4 qualifiers from the desperado squad (total 24) will contest the 6-games Round 2 finals on April 14.

The top 14 finishers together with the six seeded qualifiers will contest another 6 games in Round 3 finals. The top 6 finishers will advance to the stepladder shootout finals on April 15.

Meanwhile, Zoe Tam was Hong Kong's best women finisher in Squad A. Tam posted 917 to take up fifth position. Korea dominated the squad with Jang Haeun, Kim Hyuna and Jang Ryeon Gyeong occupying the top 3 spots with 1030, 995 and 994 respectively.

After all four squads completed their first block, PWBA Rookie of the Year, New Hui Fen led the Women's Open overseas pool with 1051 from Squad C. Squad A leader, Jang Haeun took second spot while Squad D leader, Natasha Roslan of Malaysia finished third with 1023.

Tanaprang Sathean, Nathida Sertluecha and Kantaporn Singhabubpha finished in the top 3 local pool with 1043, 955 and 953 respectively. Tam is only 9 pins off the cut in 25th position.

Sharon Limansantoso of Indonesia headed the mixed pool with 1007 while the cut at 22nd position went to Nur Syazwani Sahar of Malaysia with 926, averaging 185.20.

Milki Ng, Chan Shuk Han and Joan Cheng managed 910, 877 and 840 in their first block. The top 3 local and top 3 overseas qualifiers will earn a bye and automatically qualify for Round 3 finals while qualifiers positioned 7 to 22 (total 16) will contest the 6-games Round 2 finals on April 14.

The top 10 finishers together with the six seeded qualifiers will contest another 6 games in Round 3 finals. The top 6 finishers will advance to the stepladder shootout finals on April 15.
