Mak, Yip wins World Cup Selection

28th August, Hong Kong: Top Hong Kong national bowler, Michael Mak and Joey Yip won the World Cup Regional Selection Finals to represent Hong Kong at the 52nd QubicaAMF World Cup in Shanghai, China in October.

Mak topped the gruelling two rounds during the finals with a total of 5408 to earn the right to represent his country. The 22-year-old only made the regional finals in 12th position after managing to finish ninth in the first leg on 12 June, won the second leg on 19 June and 12th in the third leg on 3 July.

He ammased a total of 3537 pinfalls from 11 wins (220 pins bonus) in the 16-games match-play round-robin finals on August 27 before winning seven of the eight matches contested the following day for a grand total of 5408.

Henry Hui, who qualified in third, trailed Mak in both rounds but had to settle for second position with a total of 5229 pinfalls. Another Hong Kong national bowler, Eric Tseng finished third with 5142 pinfalls.

Sixteen finalists competed in Round 1 before the field was cut to eighth for Round 2. Reigning World Cup champion, Wu Siu Hong, who made the cut after Round 1 in sixth position, did not contest Round 2.

Meanwhile, ex-national and top-seed Joey Yip earned her place with victory over challenger and second-seed, Milki Ng, 225-186 in the final stepladder match. Yip had earlier topped the 16-games finals with a total of 3156 to advance as No. 1 seed.

Ng, who finished second with 2901, edged third-seed, Carmen Tang 195-193 in the first match to face Yip in the final. Chan Shuk Han missed the stepladder in fourth in the earlier roll-off by 44 pins behind Tang, who posted 2900.

Mak also took home HK$3,000 for the victory with Hui and Tseng picking up HK$2,000 and HK$1,000 for their effort. Yip earned HK$2,000 while Ng and Tang settled for HK$1,500 and HK$1,000 respectively.

The 52nd QubicaAMF World Cup will be held at Hao's Bowling Centre in Shanghai, China from 14 to 23 October, 2016.
