National bowler wins Sports Stars award

13th March, Hong Kong: National bowler and Asian Indoor & Martial Arts Games gold medalist, Michael Mak Cheuk Yin was awarded the "Hong Kong Sports Stars" award at the Samsung 2013 Hong Kong Stars Awards Presentation Ceremony held at the Grand Hall of the Hong Kong Convention and Exhibition Centre.

Mr Timothy T.T. Fok, GBS, JP, International Olympic Committee Member and President of Sports Federation & Olympic Committee of Hong KOng, China, Mr. Tsang Tak Sing, GBS, JP, Secretary for Home Affairs, Home Affairs Bureau and Mr. Lawrence Chow, Chief Marketing Officer, Samsung Electronics H.K. Co., Ltd, the Title Sponsor, gave an address and presented awards at the Ceremony.

Other prestigious presenters included Mr. Yang Jian, Deputy Director, Liaison Office of the Central People's Government in the HKSAR, Mrs. Betty FUNG, JP, Director of Leisure and Cultural Services, Leisure and Cultural Services Department.

Government officials, guests from the sports and entertainment sectors also attended this memorable "Oscars Award for Sports".

101 athletes were nominated for "individual" awards, 8 teams for "Team Only Sport" and 17 teams for "Team Events" by 46 National Sports Associations (NSAs) in this year's Awards. Hong Kong athletes attained remarkable achievements in the 3 Multi-sports Games and major international competitions held in 2013 which made this year's Awards most competitive for the nominees.

Having gone through the vetting process by the Vetting Committee and the final voting by the Judging Panel, the Sports Media, and eager responses from the public, the results of the six categories were officially announced during the Ceremony.

The winner of last year's "Best of the Best Hong Kong Sports Stars Award", Miss Sarah Lee Wai Sze (Cycling), continued her outstanding performance in 2013. Besides being among the 8 athletes in the "Hong Kong Sports Stars Awards", she again bagged the most coveted "Samsung Best of the Best Hong Kong Sports Stars Award" for the second time.

Other "Hong Kong Sports Stars" Awardees included Miss Yu Chui Yee (Physically Disabled - Wheelchair Fencing), who won the title for the fifth time. Miss Geng Xiaoling (Wushu) won the title for four consecutive years.

Miss Ng On Yee (Billiard) and Miss AU Wing Chi, Annie (Squash) were also on the list for the third time and second time respectively. Mr. Cheung Siu Lun (Fencing), Mr. Darryl O'Young (Kart) and Mr. Michael Mak Cheuk Yin (Tenpin Bowling) made their debuts among the Awardees.

Rugby Sevens Men's Team clinched the "Hong Kong Sports Stars Award for Team Only Sport" for the fifth time. In the Hong Kong Sports Stars Awards for Team Event" category, the Awards went to five-time winner Women's Wheelchair Fencing Team and the Athletics Men 4 x 100m Relay Team for the first time.
